Necromunda Underhive (Squat) Venator Gang: Felgryms Company

This is my newest gang to try out in Necromunda, my Squat Venator gang; Felgryms Company.

The general basis of the paint scheme was this photo I found online, which I really loved the look of, as it was completely different from the majority of my much warmer coloured gangs. I learned a lot painting my Escher so wanted to try out the metallic look elsewhere.

So these models were from the Thundriks profiteers set, for Warhammer underworlds, without massive conversions all over. The main changes were to the leader, and the pistol/Sword gents.
I wouldn’t class all of the additional armature stuff as being very invasive as it doesn’t detract from the lovely models themselves!

These are pretty much WYSIWYG, main features are pricy carapace armour and thunder hammer, as well as a grenade launcher and flamer. Should make things fun!

The pintle weapons are magnetised and to fit the 1000 cred starting requirements theses venators are fairly lightly equipped at the moment.

These have the weird (to me) brown plastic that you basecoat, so I base coated with Leadbelcher, and I actually purchased a suitably metallic colour (this lovely green) after being inspired by this paint scheme I found online (credit to the original ofc).

Simple highlights on the metal along with washes for interest.

Hefty amount of OSL, which I tried to keep in line with the rest of the mini colours and kept them fairly cool and cold green.

I rushed the bases a bit, as it was A) very late at night B) my son was teething pretty hard and keeping us on edge C) I didn’t have spare 30mm bases, so I nicked some from some Escher, hence some bad flash, and some glue residue. I’ll go back and tidy with appropriate gloss another day.

The big tanks on this boys back I tried a good variant of colour, I wanted more oil sheen but got a bit closer to iridescent I think, ah well.

These boys definitely will benefit from some decent photography as they look lovely in person.

So this lovely beauty is due to trek through the underhive, bringing supplies to where it is most needed!

I love the hodepodge nature of Necromunda, which again is something you don't get in the very ordered 40 and 30k battlefields.

So I simply joined the legs with a bit of sprue, and then started stacking! I've accrued a fair amount of stuff over the years which I look at and go 'i'll use that later' and never do. Finally i got to put it all to some good use!
Plenty of leftover bags, containers and cannisters. The only thing i tried to do was to tie this to the Squat venator gang, so the 'head' of this lovely beauty and its legs will likely be painted with extremely scratched versions of the paintscheme on them.
Stubber on top in case I want to play him in the Caravan mission.

Then onto the Word Bearers, my next Heresy force. This paint scheme was one I saw on Duncan Rhodes twitter and thought it worth trying out.

This is his
This is mine.
This came after some fairly poor testing with just some basic contrast paints. Even with some other washes, it still didnt look right.

The recipe is lovely and simple.

- Base Spray Leadbelcher.
- Wash Basilicum Grey (the contrast version of Nuln oil) all over.
- Paint with Flesh tearers Red.

Thats it, that in itself gives a nice effect, one that I will happily leave on the model. I want it to look almost like this. Bit more weathering needed, but dark and shiny.
I did then touch it up with some extra highlights. Now need to decide on my approach to decals, and then weathering over the top too. Proof of concept was there so that I can do a load of these guys in bulk to have them to base standard at least.

Also based some fiends to start my Daemons army off (always wanted one) Never had to use so much liquid green stuff ever!
Finally, managed to get a lovely game against my friend Darien on his lovely mortalis table at our local gaming club. I'm all for a challenge but this was just a bit of a nightmare! Terror squads are not your friend, 3 Contemptors and 2 Box Dreads against a leviathan and 2 Contemptors should have been easier than it was as well!

Next week, should be getting some more conversions on my Word Bearers.

(Yes, I frankensteined the phrase together). As I have been fairly lax in updating this, its time to speed through what I've been up to. So expect a few of these ! First up, pink butts.
Started on a 30k Daemons army! Gotta love some of those models and if 40k comes back to a good place it will serve me well.

Wanted a hybrid look to them, Chaos goodness being undivided as it was at the time, there was seemingly less segregation between the big 4, so less Red/Pink/Blue/Green racism basically.

These guys will all be Slaanesh Daemons with some Khornate features (my favourite two Chaos gods). Plus it means I get to use Samus!

Ridiculously cheap compared to some of the FW stuff.

I also managed to get my hands on a start collecting set, and made a load of cavalry, not immediately my favourite unit choice, but still pretty decent padding and fast moving as well.

Then so that I could stretch the thin budget, I converted an old Helbrute model and some bits into this Daemon thing.

For Daemons he'll likely count as a behemoth daemon (the 10 wound one) and for Word Bearers a Mhara'ghal dreadnought too!

Finally, the completed scheme on one of the Beasts. I'm intending to have less purple on the rest of the finished items, and the black graduation will be more pronounced too.

Batch painted a load of these guys for a big game and they were pretty devastating tbh.  Run the Chaos undivided Dominion, with basic shred+rending upgrades on most daemons.

Also bought a box of the Undead Corpse Counts flyers, as a cheap way to get some wings! Got some old Daemon heads and will be converting them further (more sexy obvs)

As it stands, these guys will act as a bit of a support force, as the playstyle is really simple, but fairly boring because of that for me and the opponent. (i.e. drop in peoples faces, charge)

Catch-up-alanche! Necromunda bulk scenery painting method

Again, no apologies for the title, catch-ups are hard.

So, had a load of Necromunda scenery to paint, so out comes the batch painting assembly line! Apart from needing a decent space to get this done, you can give it a good enough look.

Its busy enough to break the board up nicely.

My method for this lot is...

  1. Spray black (cheap primer if poss)
  2. Dry brush Leadbelcher over everything
  3. Dry brush tops with Stormhost silver,
  4. Base bronze's dark brown (Mournfang?)
  5. Fairly dilute Gehenna's gold on Bronzes
  6. Paint elements of wiring/switches/dials/screens with Reds/Greens/Blues
  7. Wash certain elements of metals with different tones (blues/purples) (this one was an Army painter metallic metal which I liked.
  8. Paint hazard stripes on, don't beat yourself up for not perfecting these, they will be washed and weathered with the yellow of the stripes anyway
  9. Sponge dab the whole thing for rust effects Slayer orange mix (emphasising the bases of the pieces)
  10. Cover the entire piece with liberal but light Burnt umber Oil wash, go twice if needed.
  11. Go back over with heavier oil wash mix for heavier run-off areas
  12. Wash bronzes with Nihilakh Oxides.

I was intending to do a load more greens to represent some real run-off and effluents etc, but realised i'd like to use for some other projects down the line so resisted for now.

Catch-up-alanche! Multicolour Necromunda boards

So these were something I spotted online and realised I needed to try it, and found the process so simple I had to commit. You're best doing with the GW plastic tiles to represent the same process but anything works!

These turned out far prettier than I had thought they would, adding some real vibrancy to the board I haven't gone over these again to tone them back, but I may still do that in the future.

The process was as follows.

  • Splurge colour.

  • Spray and diffuse. (empty clean dettol bottle and lots of water) LOOOOOOTS of water....
  • Blow and tip, mix the colours slightly.
  • Leave to dry. That's it

So one thing I was lacking was some rust, some decent chemical spills, and black oils etc. But that is coming later when some other projects are a bit more finished.

So here is the test panel in line with the larger board, with some snaps for the stages. and the finished product.

Obviously by itself it looked a little out of place....so....

And when all dried and done?

Like I said, three things to add, sump chemicals, oil runoff, maybe more rust.

Catch-up-alanche! Necromunda Water guild + Scum + Gryph-hound Phyrr Cat

Spent some time bashing some underhive denizens together to help pad out my crew.

These were using up of leftovers (and one very intentional sculpt for the Nautician) and were a nice break between some painting.

Intent was to get these painted so they'd show up nice and clearly as a distinctive group when working alongside everyone else.

The leader was very much a 'now I'm bored and want to try what paint schemes might work'. I don't massively think it did to be honest, but working with it now.

As well as these, I painted some Scum over a couple of nights with a combination of contrast and normal paints.

I picked up the Necromunda Underhive Scum pack as it was (for Forgeworld) a pretty good deal at £20 for three models. Really lovely sculpts and really fun models.

I still am not an expert at painting tiny female faces so was happy with these results!

The Gryph hound I wanted as I got tired of waiting for FW to put out some Phyrr cat models, and the Gryph hound look matched with the more noble look my Escher were going for.

Loads of drybrushing for speed, but came out nicely.

Catch-up-alanche! Speed painting with contrast

Just a little video for anyone not sure of whether Contrasts are worth it. I have a friend called...Bames, who is wary of painting. Contrasts are great paints, and will easily help anyone get through their stack of scary looking models at speeeeeeeed.

4 colours, Red, Purple, Black, and Flesh.

Video was condensed from 5 minutes to 30 seconds. Dry time approx 15 minutes.

Super easy and three foot appropriate!

Catch-up-alanche! Necromunda Shrooms?

Well the Underhive is bleak and full of danger, so a little colourful fungus cant hurt surely?
Maybe not...
I'd been staring at a block of Black Epoxy resin which I'd initially bought when looking at bulk options for sculpting, and realised I'd never get round to using it for its purpose.
So with some time on my hands I made a few different mushroom shapes.
Started with some nice button ones, nothing weird there. Blood blots lets call them. (Simple tube of resin, and then an indent made into a ball with a rounded tool

Then some spikey bits, Dead Cones sounds good.

Some wide Frog inspired ones too, Spotcap Forest. (Remember to really define the edges of the mushrooms and align them up to the sky/roof, look at real pictures to get a good effect)

Finally, some rusty ones. Rust fungus. Sure.

Nice couple of coats of Ardcoat' over these to give a glossy look too.
Tried sculpting these as quick and dirty as I could, as I mixed the entire batch of resin, and had a lot curing quickly. But in reality, the finger marks etc seem to work quite well, and the squished natural shapes will do fine.

Specifically bought some grass for this, and tried to make the colours of the rust and blood marry up. I would like to spend a bit more time harmonising the colours with the rest of the terrain, so will do some more of these and then do a load more.

Mixed these with some existing scenery for some longevity as these are fairly fragile too.
